My Great Aunts Present
My Great Aunt’s present to me for my 10th birthday was a Wendt & Kuhn angel. She informed me that it was time for me to carry on with an old family tradition that started back in Germany in the 1920’s. That was when she received her first Wendt & Kuhn angel from her aunt.
This is one of those family traditions that were started in the country of origin before a family would immigrate to America. What was amazing was the distance her collection has traveled since she owned it. She also remembered when she received each and every one of them.
The one she chose for me was the same one that she first received. It is of a little angle kneeling and praying. My family was and still is very religious and this symbolized to her the strength of God and all of his power. I could understand this since the time she received it was right after the great conflict called World War One and the great depression was engulfing the world.
I have since learned a great deal about this little wooden angel company. It was started by a couple of ladies seeking to express their spirituality in a productive manner. These ladies saw their male family members going off to war, not knowing if they would ever see them again.
That was the beginning, but not the only obstacle that was thrown in the path of this little German company. After the end of World War Two, they found themselves on the Russian occupied side of the wall. It was 44 years later when they were finally free of the communist and their authoritarian rule that stifled growth of the business.
I do prefer the Angels of spiritual inspiration but there were many others that I wanted to see and learn about. There are also ones that represent the different members of an orchestra. Today there are 68 different ones that a person can see and purchase. To help make it more realistic there is a podium for the conductor to stand on. There are even two types of music stands. One of the stands is appropriate for the angels that are sitting and the other for the ones standing.
There are even tiered Angel Mountains on which each of my angles can be placed when I want to display them. I have also purchased the Angel slumber vault that is velvet lined to protect each angel when I decide to store them or transport them to a family member’s home.
It was some years again when my great aunt gave me my first Wendt & Kuhn Angel. Today is the day I pass this long standing family tradition on to my niece. I just pray this new Wendt & Kuhn Angel inspires her as much as my Great Aunt’s present did me.
